What WAS he thinking?

by justwannaplay » Mon Mar 21, 2011 10:37 am

OK, this constant raining is getting me bored, so let me throw this out there. I was watching a game last week and the runner comes into home and bowls over the catcher, who was standing on the plate. Whether that's right or wrong is a discussion for another thread, but the coach of the catcher then switches out his pitcher. The very next batter, on the first pitch, gets hit. Solid shot, right in the side. Then the coach switches pitchers again. Pretty obvious, I think, what he did. A warning was issued, and the game continued. My thought was, "Really? You're teaching this to 12-year olds?" So, what are your thoughts?

Bush league all the way around. Runner should have been tossed, if it was intentional plowing by runner. Coach of pitcher should have been tossed, and that pitcher needs to find a new team. Its 12's people, get a grip.....

Good one! Lots of possibilities...
A. Didn't want to risk having the current pitcher ejected.
B. Preferred giving instruction to hit batter in dugout - not as abvious.
C. Wasn't sure current pitcher would intentionally hit batter.
D. Wasn't sure current pitcher COULD intentionally hit batter.

most of the time when a collision happens in 12u, it was an accident, but the adults get all worked up lik eit was a plan from the beginning thought up by Dr. Evil. Get a grip.

I think it is quite commendable that a grown man elects to have a 12 year old girl fight his battles, completely unconcerned about the intentional infliction of pain on another 12 year old child and doing that rather than having a man to man discussion with the other team's coach. In fact, I'm inclined to donate an electron microscope to this fine gentleman so that he can locate his huevos.

Nutless (but not THAT nutless) Squirrel

(To clarify: I'm talking about the pitcher's coach)
10 years from now I'll wish I felt like I do these days.

I saw the play and it was definitely bush league.pitcher came in from left field and the MUCH harder than the previous pitcher.throws one pitch, hits the girl in the ribs and the coach calls time and sends the pitcher back to left field. Meanwhile, said pitcher is laughing about the whole event with the other outfielders.

I am one of the coaches for the runners team. We have a very clear video which show both girls not really paying attention (the play was at first base). Catcher clearly standing on the plate and umpire watching the whole event. Our runner, (12 years old) has been instructed to pay more attention and to always SLIDE at home in the future. Coaching this game for over 30 years and I have never witnessed what happened next. Was it intentional? In my opinion, yes. My thoughts go right to baseball Dad. Sorry, doesn't happen here. I am sure he was self congratulating himself on his hitting our player. Our head coach immediately went to the umpire and told him "we don't play that way". Ump, figuring, "it's just 12 year old girls" issues warning to both teams, but does not talk to the coach who's pitcher hit our batter. Maybe, instead of throwing at the next hitter, you might teach your catcher to stand in front of the plate next time.
