VYPE Magazine Top 20 Players To Watch in DFW Area

by TXfastpitchsoftball » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:27 pm

Stumbled on this tonight. Has anyone else seen it? Whoever writes the softball piece needs to make a call next time to someone other than the Texas Glory and Rapid Fire. Seriously, my quick review is that 11 of the 20 Players To Watch are in the Texas Glory organization. Four of the remaining nine play for the Texas Rapid Fire. I'm not saying these aren't good ball players because they are very good, but half wouldn't be on my list of Top 20 players in DFW to watch.

Your numbers are off. Looks like VYPE put in a call to Glory Adkins as well which you threw into the same pile as Texas Glory.

Most of the kids on that list are DI commits/signees and have been on lots of other lists (RISE/DMN/etc.) You're hinting at favoritism and it's taking away from the hard work those girls have spent their lives on.

Well, if you say so that there is a different between one Glory and the other. But I'm not "hinting" at anything. If you can't see favoritism (or maybe it's just lazy reporting) as you call it on this list, you're blind or play for the Glories. And that takes away from other deserving players who work just as hard but unfortunately for them, don't play for top high schools or travel clubs in the city. And, just so you understand clearly, my comments have nothing to do with the players on the list, who are all very good players that deserve lots of individual recognition.

I know there are tremendous ballplayers not on this list. It's hard to argue with a list full of DI commits though wouldn't you say?

You, Kevin, and Dan may think the Glories are seperate, and they might actually be, but not sure the rest of the softball world thinks so. I am almost certain area high school coaches, many college coaches, and the DMN dont' know the difference.

As to your statement above, are you agreeing that this list of the Top 20 To Watch isn't the real Top 20, but just a biased Collin County-Texas Glories' list, because there are "tremendous" Div. I signees not on it? And if being a Div. I recruit is the standard to be on the list, you're flat wrong (and bought into the Texas Glory sales job) Some of the top players in the city will be playing Div. II and III next year, and some of the Div. I players on VYPE's list will get less than 25-50 at bats in their college careers.

Make it what you want, but I'm not saying these players aren't great players because they are, but next time it would be nice for VYPE to make an effort to look beyond two or three travel clubs and some well-known high schools to find the Top 20 Players To Watch in the DFW area. Otherwise, they will never really achieve the credibility in high school sports that they desire.

Not sure that vype has any idea what travel teams these players are on. They only mention their High School teams. That being said there is alot of very good players left off the list.

In Houston, Vype contacted a coach from one of prominent gold teams in the area. She contacted good players and coaches she knew from travel and high school teams. She did a good job of getting a representative group together. Vype was interested in having high schools represented not gold organizations. The photographer was not real familiar with softball. One exchange was along these lines:

Coach: What group do you want next?

Photographer: The best hitters.

Coach: Do want slappers or power hitters first?

Photographer: What's a slapper?
