HSE beat Westfield 31-0 last night. Feel bad for the players, but they are living a nightmare. Norwood coaching at his best. Some people just shouldnt be allowed to coach -:lol:

What??? A 20 run victory wasn't enough? Can you say "just bunt it to the pitcher?" Hope the winning coach enjoyed the handshake line after the game. Wonder if he could look the kids from the opposing team in the eyes, the kids he humiliated 31-0. I am sorry, there is no excuse for that.

31-0 is a bit embarassing for a school with the resources that Westfield has.

Can't say I would have had my girls bunt to the pitcher and ruin their batting averages but perhaps I would have had them hit and then step off for an out at about 20-0. Hard to make kids just give up at the plate but walking off a base is a little easier for them to do....

Coach, there are other life lessons to be taught thru athletics other than worrying about your batting average while bludgeoning an obviously outmatched opponent 31-0. Coaches should take that opportunity and teach humility and sportsmanship, rather than teaching how to pad one's RBI totals. HSE obviously is very good and they have zero to prove by killing an ill-equipped foe. If you are a school NOT in HSE's conference and they call and want to schedule a game next season, are you going to play them? I would tell them to take a hike, courtesy of their coach.

The girls know their stats and for a coach to ask them to sacrifice bunt would be ignorant on his part. The correct approach is to let the girl do her thing at the plate that she has obviously worked very hard at and then have them step off at the base once they reached base. Of course this would be done once the score reached about 20-0. That would not increase RBI's nor would it hurt her ERA or On Base %. Unfortunately, stats are a big part of the game for girls looking to move to the next level, even if it is only high school ball and not travel ball. It's reality.

Coach, I agree in not running from competition and I never have. BUT, putting up 31 runs on a team speaks volumes about the coach and program, so regardless of the competitive balance my choice would be to play someone else. That score was COMPLETELY within the control of the HSE coach; he could have loaded the bases and just froze his baserunners, he could have stepped off early, or bunted to a player to make outs. Games like this are a race to 12 runs, then make your outs and go home.
Two thoughts on the stats you mention as so important in high school: First, the schools we play usually have a student manager or a parent in the dugout keeping stats and the end product is not worth the paper is is written on. Dubious hits, missed errors and lack of knowledge of the game make many school's stats a joke. I have seen it every week so far, it is not debateable. Every team errs on the side of their players, meaning that averages are usually inflated whenever judgement is involved. Was that a hit or an error? Awww, lets give her a hit.
Second, back to the HSE game and the arguement about asking a hitter to make an out at the plate. If HSE was the home team, they would have batted 4 innings minimum; if EVERY batter scored that did not make an out, they would have had 43 batters come to the plate. That is the absolute minimum. Every batter in the lineup would have batted every inning and at LEAST 4 times, so asking a few kids to bunt to end the game was not going to destroy their averages or keep them from getting recruited. The stat arguement is exaggerated.

This is honestly more about the losing coaches ego and the schools rep. The losing kids feel it the LEAST. It's the losing parents, coaches, and faculty that get their panties in a wad.
