For the record zero starters were pulled after the first inning. HSE pulled 2 starters after the second inning once it was 21-0. They pulled 5 more starters after the third inning. Two starters stayed in for the whole game. He had runners leave early 3 times during the game. Two of those were their last 2 outs of the game once they were far enough ahead 31-0.

Did anyone else hear about Center Grove's 25-0 beat down of Lawrence North on Friday? As I understand it (wasn't there, but heard from a reliable source), Milligan NEVER took his foot of the gas. As I undertand it, he intentionally embarassed a young (no seniors) LN team and first year coaching staff. Does Milligan deserve a free pass because of his self-imposed greatness? I think not. It appears as if Cook was at least attempting to call off the dogs (or perhaps not). Milligan's intent was to humiliate his opponent. Anyone who undertakes to humiliate an opponent does not deserve to be "coaching" in any sport, at any level. Nice job, "Coach"?

It's amusing to me that someone can discern "intent" of two different coaches yet was not present at either game.

I'm not defending either coach, because I agree with the general sentiment that you should step off the base to "create" outs. Having said that, I have seen "losing" coaches get furious with teams that have done this or bunted in situations to create outs. They felt like they were being shown up because their team wasn't as talented, so it can cut both ways.

But back to my original statement, I'm curious as to how such discernment on intent is possible or learned. I would love to be able to determine the intent of many players, coaches, and umpires that I observed over the years.

I'm not sure I understand the basis for the "amusement," Turn two. People in all walks of life, including, but not limited to, law enforcement officers, judges, etc., are called upon daily to discern the intent of people, while at the same time not being present to witness the actual event.

For what it is worth, I spoke to several people who were at both games. Those that I spoke to who were in attendance at the Westfield game (from the Westfield side) didn't think HSE did anything "wrong" per se. However, some of the posts would tend to suggest otherwise. With regard to CG, just go to varvee and look at the stat line. I think this is a pretty good expression of intent.

I will not reveal my sources, but let's just say I am comfortable with my post and stand by it.

I was at the CG game and based on what I did observe, don't believe it was the intent of Milligan to humiliate LN. Should they have stepped off the base to create an out, probably so. I would have.

They started going station to station in the 2nd inning and all of the available subs were in the game in the 3rd. If it was his intent to humiliate LN, CG could have scored considerably more runs than they did.

So what I'm reading from this thread is that Westfield and Lawrence North are really bad(nothing meant in a bad way to the girls on those teams) but the parents complaining on here are really bad losers and they turn to trying to bash the Winning Coach. Now that's funny stuff! Everybody always hates a winner!

I know who most on here are(minus the 10U thread!!), none from the schools mentioned! A couple, maybe!! Either way, both coaches are wrong! It is very easy to get out of this situation, do it!!

I do not have a child on either team, but I do know people close to both the Westfield and Lawrence North softball programs. Thankfully, I don't recall ever being on the opposite side of a beat down like the ones mentioned.

To all coaches - always take the "high road" when situations like these arise. If you don't know where the "high road" is, ask for directions. Perhaps your AD, Principal or another coach can assist. Do not forget that as a "coach" you are both a teacher of softball and life lessons. What did the HSE and CG girls learn in their games? Unless all of them are headed into the military (where our team is expected to dominate the opponent), I'm comfortable suggesting that these were not very good lessons.

Well said "looking in."

This week, McCutcheon beat Westfield 21-1. The lone run by Westfield was unearned - a WP. At about 15-1 (bottom of the third), the McC coach started pulling varsity starters and putting in JV players who were in the dugout for senior night. But the JV players still batted, and no runners were asked to leave early. The Westfield players did not look beaten at any time. They kept their chins up and played hard. They got runners on base and never gave up. The Westfield coach did everything he could to help them win. He just doesn't have the pitching and the defense needs a lot of work. I saw him coaching the players on the most fundamental of fundamentals throughout the game.

This was a conference game for McCutcheon too. And senior night. The seniors wanted to play, and they did for most of the game. I don't know how the McC coaches could have softened the blow for Westfield any more than they did. What's an acceptable margin of winning anyway? Ten runs? McC has done that this season. 15 runs? Same thing. Is the 20 run margin against Westfield acceptable?
