Playing Fall Ball Why???????

by Mr. Monday! » Thu Aug 11, 2011 4:09 pm

As the fall starts I would like to hear some input on fall ball and what it really stands for.....I have some basic questions that have been going through my head..... :D

1. Ideal number of kids for a team?
2. What is the fall for? Is it just an extension of the Summer season?
3. What should coaches be doing doing fall? ie... trying kids at new positions, fine tuning areas of weakness ie. coaches and players...., conditioning and reps......
4. How many tourneys and friendlies are ideal?
5. Cost?

Please give me your input of what an ideal program should be doing in fall........

The fall season is different for each age group. What age group are you asking about?

My two cents:

Fall ball is great for teams that are transitioning from one age division to another.
It affords hitters a chance to get used to the higher level pitching they will see in the upper age divisions.
The pace of the game gets faster and faster as the girls get older, so the more they play in the fall the better they will perform during the spring/summer season.
The drawbacks of fall ball are the weather and trying to maintain the balance between school and softball.
Besides all that, what would you do with all those free weekends anyway.

Yes play fall ball unless your 12U or under and feel you dd needs a break. At 14u and above Im not an advocate of not playing fall as they are big development years and your dd will likely get passed by.
600-850 Depending on ORG and what you get with your money is about right for 6-7 tourneys.
Bigger ORGs charge more for various reasons, most of them not good :)
If you think its to high ask for a report on expenses. EVERY team should be letting you know exactly where all the money is going. If they are a FOR-profit team they do not have to do this, but any non profit team should be doing this. Nothing gripes me more than teams who do not do this.
Roster size in fall best at 13 IMO. Fall is about developing and showcasing depending on age group. Everyone should be playing and sitting.

Thanks so much for the input so far. The age group will be 14U coming from 12U. They say the game gets faster as you move up age groups. So as my daughter will be transitioning, I can see a need to be exposed to game speed. This year when we watched the 14U some pitching was average, and then some was over the top. I guess that why you need like 6 tournaments.
Thanks!
