Either I wrote it wrong, or you read it wrong. In the case of re-planting BEFORE the B-R returns to touch the missed base, it is a Live Ball Appeal.

I am confused, me and you are on the same page with the exception of the re-plant, you require it I do not, and it must be a Live Appeal.

I think that you're getting off track with this "re-plant" thing. The fielder has either touched the base or she has not. She could be touching it as part of her initial play, or she could step off the bag and then touch it again, or she could stand there stomping her foot up and down on the base...so long as she does that before the runner returns AND indicates to the umpire what is being appealed, it would be a vaild appeal.

I have found what Tony & MTR said on this matter to be 100% correct.- I utilize this section of Hey Bucket to learn more about some of he more obscure rules out there and bot of them are a KEY resource. If you do indeed plan to umpire- your best bet would be to get to know them well and use them as a resource-it will serve you well

I feel so right about this and have researched so much that I can actually say maybe you will say the same thing about me one day.

That is not to say that these mechanics are what they are doing these days and what is accepted. I am just saying they are wrong mechanics from what I am reading in a 2005 rulebook. (Only 1 I can find online that is free) if someone comes on here and says they changed the rule then I will concede and shut-up

Clint.....I have been acquainted with MTR, Bret, Tony, both Steves, and Hugo for close to 15 years.

Three of them are clinicians (and many of the rest of us have taught at various other clinics) and two have/do serve on the ASA National Rules committee. I have attended several ASA State Umpiring Schools, along with two National Schools.

I can assure you (but I doubt you will take my word for it), that the interpretations you have gotten from these fine folks are the correct and proper way to handle the situation outlined in the OP.

Good luck in your umpiring future.

And if you cannot sleep at night because you disagree with the way a rule is interpreted by the NUS. Do everyone a favor and stay home and get a good nights rest.

News flash.. Pluto has been re-classified as a dwarf planet and a plutoid...

Relevance - My dad, you, and I was taught it was just a planet. Seize the day my friend...nobody knows how many we might have left.

A master of anything learns the most from his minions.

If you read the whole posts I have already made a couple of concessions concerning a proper appeal and that was what the whole argument has been about. But I have also cited at least 2 live appeal plays that did not require a "secondary action", "Known Intent", or "verbalization". The Live Appeal just took place as prescribed in the rulebook.

AND I ALSO KNOW there are situations when play has become relaxed and they do something that is not normal progression of play, then I would have to require some form of verbalization of what they are attempting to do.

They have tried to trip me up on that 1st to 3rd situation where the defender brushes up agaisnt 2B.. Come on, was an actual play being made at 2B? did the girl pause and look at me as if she wanted me to make some type of call? the answer is no.

Umpiring is about the hardest task a fan of the game can partake in. You are required to to load about 150 pages of rules in your brain and act on plays in 1 second.

BTW... I played baseball from the time I was 4 to 18 playing at the college level until I hurt my arm. Marines were next. At the age of 20 I was umpiring High School Ball and by 21 was umpiring at the College Level. I took a break and actually played baseball until I was 38. Travel Softball with both my girls for the last six years and now I am here on Heybucket arguing with you guys.

I only say this because I wasn't sure if you were bragging, intimidating, or just wanted me to get know you guys....LOL

Oh!! one last thing...I stand by my OP although I should not have been so abrasive...I was trying to kid around and it spawned into 11 pages of stuff. But I still stand by it.. We have'nt even discussed the whole no such thing as a force out at first deal but that tipped me off that he has read the rulebook about a 1000 times. When an umpire gets picky like that it makes the coaches mad. Most coaches define a force out as not having to tag a girl for the out so in effect there is such a thing as a force out at 1st base and when I read his OP he clarified that in a way that made it hard to read but he did clarify it. Even UmpSteve said the same thing and I still think it is funny. Need to be careful in what you say or how you say it or your point will not be taken seriously. Arguing with someone over a put out and a force out is never a good idea.

I am sure they are fine folks...other than a little bantering...I have never said anything bad about them. Now most of them have told me not to umpire, 1 feels sorry for me, etc... But also understand it is a website if I meet any of these fine folks in person one day I am sure it would be a good conversation. If nothing else I will allow them to look at me like some kinda of specimen for 30 seconds....LMAO

And I was umpiring baseball at the age of 14 and guess what? The rule and mechanic then was the same as you are being told here and now in baseball and softball. Do you really want to hear how I played FP & SP while in the Navy and at the same time umpiring LL & Babe Ruth-level ball at the same time? But do you know what level and longevity mean to a sports official? Nothing, but they have done something for a long time and at some point, reached a pinnacle of which they are proud. Doesn't mean crap if you do not continue the educational process each and every season.

BTW, I'm very comfortable in stating the training you received as a baseball umpire probably pales to what is continually available to softball umpires in this country save the professional baseball umpire schools. Still does, IMO.

And I don't think you should avoid umpiring, just don't try it until you are prepared to forget everything you think you know and start from scratch. BTW, that is not just for you, I instruct everyone in the same manner and I've got a pretty good success rate as do the others who have chimed in on this thread. Those who do not succeed fail to do so out of choice.

BTW, have you yet to present this on a real officiating site?

@MTR

I thought you would at least laugh at my jokes....especially the specimen joke.

I have decided not to post it on other sites. This is the only one I am member of and don't feel like becoming a member of others over just one issue. I still have to deal with this whole Flex/DP issue after all.

You all keep stating the same exact thing like I don't believe this is how it is done. I BELIEVE THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE. I am not stupid, too many people has told me how it is done. Allthough, I have called out several plays that nobody will speak directy about them that perhaps suggest that the powers that be take into consideration. You know...that whole continuing education thing you spoke of.

I only listed my background as a JOKE to banter with the other dude that was telling me who you guys are.

Yes back in my day OJT and the book is all I had along with my dad, and my bookie Mr. Cook. So I know training is alot better today.

My quote "Masters of anything learn most from their minions" (You being the master and me the minion) suggest that maybe taking a look at the mechanics of a live appeal needs tweaking a little bit as to level the playing field.

If I decide I can step back on the hallowed ground that you have trapesed upon for the last 45 years I will call it like these clinics I have to attend tells me to call them whether I agree with it or not. I am sure there some you do not agree with.

Oh almost forgot I will probably email Dick Gayler. He is the South Atlantic Region UIC.

I can't figure out though if this would be a bother to him or not or if he would enjoy it. I could probably throw a stone to his listed address from where I am sitting now.

When he tells me this is the proper mechanic I will still suggest it needs re-visiting and the reasons why (using the book not my opinion).

I am sure you guys conduct meetings for this reason...probably missed 2012 season.
