Our varsity coach did not teach/coach the jv players at all. She did not even attend any of the games. The varsity players treated them badly. Many of their friends were playing varsity at other schools, since only the biggest schools even have select players on their jv squad.

Most of the games are not competitive, since most schools do not have select player (or pitchers) at the jv level (again)!

They are 2nd class citizens.

Good Luck!

Depending on where your DD goes to school will determine how bad its going to be. I know in South Houston area the only programs with descent JV teams are: Pearland, Deer Park, Dobie and Alvin. These programs will be the only one with kids that would more than likely make Varsity at other schools in the South Houston area. I can't speak for the teams up North but I'm sure there are a few. I watched some JV games last year and it was HARD to watch!!! Hell some of the kids knew more than the coach (JV) since they have never seen a diamond before. Highschools can only afford to pay the Varsity coaches so everyone below suffers. Period!! Be thankful that most highschool coaches don't care if the kids JV and below play with there club teams. What gets me is a freshman making Varsity and ALL they do is run or doesn't play much. This doesn't make any sense to me??? I would rather have my DD play every inning on JV then sit the bench on Varsity but I guess the thought of being a 4 year letterman and the hype is more to some. Whatever floats your boat though, most of the better kids on JV get pulled up to Varsity for playoffs anyway.

Not pretty softball, bring a cooler of your favorite beverage to the games, it will help make the games appear more competitive.

While this is all true for our hs too, we are hoping to change some of the controllables this year for our program.

We have a few surprises for them, but the best one IMO is the varsity girls cheering similar to the A&M "Sugar Daddies". They are wearing a jv shirt with a players name on the back, announcing the girl they're representing, and hopefully cheering and dancing their tales off.

Maybe it fails, but hoping it creates a friendlier environment for all.

You have the same situation on the North side also, Tomball, The Woodlands, Klein Oak all have good JV programs. There are a couple of reasons, first just being the high concentration of good talent. Not everyone can play Varsity so there are good players left for the JV teams. Secondly, the better coaches realize where next years Varsity talent plays this year so they do work with them and help develop them.

Overall though JV softball is a hard thing to watch. And yes almost every team has that speedy
Freshman that makes Varsity annd only runs. If that is your daughter I agree with TXFastpitchCoach, I would have to think which is better, playing on JV or riding the bench on Varsity. Although due to injuries I have seen that "runner" become a starter on a few teams.

I feel for ya Frito.

Your daughter is better off playing JV than riding pine in the Varsity as a specialist.

It's gotta be hard to come to the games as some people I know did when they know their kid isn't going to play. I'm sure it's harder for the kid, especially if the kid can play.

Don't get too excited about the level of play at the JV level (By the same token, don't get too excited about the level of play at the varsity level either) As you will discover, HS softball is not on par with select ball. On the plus side, your kid will get daily reps and I'm sure you will see her rejoin select ball in May looking sharp, aside from the need to get used to seeing pitching over 40 mph again. :?

Depending on the feed into the school, you could have a great JV team. However, the teams they face might be hard pressed to beat a 14U squad. I think our HS only dresses 13 for varsity and the other 20+ kids are on JV. My daughter took a junior's spot last year and started from game 3 of the season going forward. I also saw where the other freshman that started the season rode the bench after a few games. It really comes down to politics. Playing time is still playing time though. Given the choice, my daughter would have rather played on JV with her freinds then to ride the varsity bench. Either luck or skill, she made an impact and continuted to play. Season starts tonight, so I am looking forward to see who advanced from last year.
