Stats Question

I coach a small High School Softball team. I put stats on Varvee after every game and my questions is this: If you ROE (reach on error) that is not considered a hit? Correct? When I look at my book vs. what the other coach has for stats it doesn't seem to match. There are times when one of their players reach base because of a throwing error or fielding error and they have it as a hit. If that happens to one of our batters I don't count it as a hit. Now with that being said, if it is close or questionable I give the benefit to our player/team. I can only assume coaches do this so their girls have better batting stats. I am a new coach and don't know nearly everything so any help would be appreciated. I hope everyone is enjoying the season and the girls are doing well! Keep in mind that is why we all do this.

You will find a lot of anomalies like you describe in Varvee or anywhere else. Sometimes they're honest mistakes, sometimes scorekeepers just don't know, and sometimes they just cook the books. I enter my team's stats, and leave the other team to their own vices.

FYI, you might be surprised to know how many people think that just because Susie hit the ball and ended up on first base, it's a hit. Just like in rec ball when little Susie hit the ball and 1 fielding error and two throwing errors later she crosses home for a home run.

Wait...what?!?!? You mean they weren't...great. Did she hit the ball? Yes. Did she round the bases? Yes. That's a homerun Slapperdad.

Chalk that up to middle school ball as well. Line drive to CF for a nice single, but then the CF boots it so she's on to second, going to try her luck at third but then an overthrow allows her to keep going all the way to home. Mom comes down "How do ya like THAT homerun?!?!" Are you serious, Clark??

What if little Susie hits a good line drive that goes into the outfield, and the outfielders can barely throw the ball so it takes two throws just to get in back to the infield. By that time, little Susie is rounding third, but the throw is made to third anyway where little Susie no longer is, and the third baseman throws to home, but again, sadly, the throw is late.

Is that a home run?

Not that I know anything, but I would mark that a base hit/double and extra bases were reached "on throw".

Your thinking is correct Charley. The only thing I don't particularly care for is the "if it is close or questionable I give the benefit to our player/team" statement. As an honest scorekeeper that decision should be equal for both sides; ie. if it is close or questionable the call goes to the batter/runner regardless of which team she is on.

The main thing as scorekeeper is to be consistant.

Good question. I currently have a 13 yr old upset at me because she hit one over the RF head, it took 3 throws to get it in (middle school ball) and she rounded them all. I gave her a triple. She obviously thought it was a homerun...no throw made it to home at all. Had the wind not been blowing very hard and straight in, it would have been a moot point. Can't argue the ones that actually do go over the fence. Is it her fault that they couldn't physically get the ball in? They didn't drop it or anything...just couldn't throw it far enough. I will abide by the good people on HB's decision. It is quite possible I was just too hard on my daughter because I thought they should have been able to get the ball in.

Come on Coolstuff, you've been around, you know what double, triple, HR is. My kid's a slapper, she has a little speed, she puts pressure on the D, and in my opinion forces some of the errors that she reaches on, but it's still an ROE and doesn't do diddly poo for her OBP.
