Texas Teams In Colorado - Few End Up in Top of Brackets

by 93players » Sun Jul 01, 2012 10:28 pm

The Colorado tournaments are great for exposure and a good time. This year, a few Texas teams made it close to the top. Congrats to

Texas Impact Gold Burke - Tied for 3rd In Colorado Fireworks Super 96
Austin Platinum Softball 18U - Tied for 3rd In Colorado Fireworks 18U Open
MC Elite Gold 18U - Tied for 3rd in Colorado Fireworks 18U Open

Boulder Indy 18U - None in top 6
Louisville Indy 18U - None in top 8
Longmont Indy 18U - None in top 8

Sorry, the Sparkler Brackets and website are too confusing to find the top finishers at this time.

Would love to hear from those who chose to leave Boulder Indy and play Super 96. How do you compare the number of coaches at Super 96. Thanks

And not many of the coaches I talked to were all that thrilled with the online database at the TCS sites. They all seemed to like the hard copy that Boulder/Louisville/Longmont handed out.

I am hearing that the Boulder competition was much more robust than Super 96. One Houston club with a large roster tried to play both and it did not work out well. Personally, I have never liked the mandatory hotel requirements of the Triple Crown folks. Having received a call three years ago that we were one room under the minimum with 3 teams in Fireworks and they were thinking of booting us, made us switch to Indy. We are fortunate to have had the reputation to move over.

As one who played in both, on the "Houston club that it didn't work so well", there were definitely more coaches in Boulder, where they always are. As far as your assessment that it "didn't work out so well", you are correct in the W/L column. Ask the 9 uncommitted girls how much exposure they got, 2 were 8th graders, and I think they will tell you it was a success. Yes it would have been nice to win more, but the young ones got what they went for.

I always kind of chuckle when someone starts comparing how teams do at Boulder or Fireworks. Different teams go to Colorado with different goals. Some go to showcase young players and get their unsigned players offers, and others go to win games. You never know when the team pitched a freshman or sophomore, or maybe put in their second/third team against an opponent trying to win its pool. No one should make any assumptions about any team based on how they finish in Colorado unless the team finishes in the Top 10-15, in which case, you can assume the team is pretty darn good.

Two quick points: "did not go well" came from a parent and may have referred to driving back and forth and some team chemistry issues compared to when the team was together playing on all cylinders. Of course, showcasing the uncommitted is a major goal. One reason why I found it interesting is because I always thought it would be interesting to play in both. Never crazy enough to prevail, just thought it would be an interesting experiment.

I agree that teams go to Colorado with different goals, but some programs in California have so much depth that whether they play committeds or uncommitteds they can win. It is just a testament to how strong Cali softball is.

Personally, I believe overall the talent is down in the state of Texas this year. Anyone else agree?

I think Texas had a pretty good showing in Colorado. Triple Crown's Super 96 had 4 Texas teams in the top 12 (Texas Impact Gold, Texas Sudden Impact Gold, Texas Kaos Gold, and Texas Bombers Gold); Fireworks 18 Open had 2 (MC Elite Gold and Platinum Gold); Sparkler 18 Open had 1 (Centex Buzz). Looks like Texas teams did not fair quite so well at the Indy. Congratulations to these teams for a great week, and to all teams that accomplished their goals of showing off their girls on a big stage.

Texas Aces Express McCorkle - 18U Gold was the last Texas team standing and they tied for 9th place out of a 100 or so teams. I would say that is fairing OK. ;)
If it ain't broke, why fix it??
