What is considered good OBP/Avg in Softball?

What's on your mind?

by jofus » Tue Oct 07, 2008 1:32 pm

From that link....

"f - if the ball is not touched because of confusion as to whom should
have fielded it, or because a fly ball was misjudged and the fielder
could not recover in time to gain good position, credit a hit,"

WTH? I wouldn't credit that a hit, personally....

Oh, and

"8. when no one covers the base or a fielder is late in coveting the base (use three
feet as guideline to whether or not she got there)" [credit a hit]

?

Then you would be wrong. This is scoring 101.

That last one made more sense in the errors section. basically if she received the ball within 3 feet of the base and didn't step on the base. error. if she was further than 3 feet away...hit

What are the religious implications of this rule, if any?

If you covet the base in your heart, it's the same as stealing it.

I didn't imply that I was right, I just said that I wouldn't credit it a hit. Maybe that's why I don't keep the books very often. A pop-up in the infield that has 3 infielder's looking at each other shouldn't be a hit, IMHO. On occasion, my opinion may differ from the actual "rule".

As to the other, if a first baseman charges a bunt, makes a good play, and turns to throw in plenty of time to get the runner out, and the second baseman is standing there looking at some cute boy up in the bleachers, then, again IMHO, that isn't really a hit, but an error.

I guess I'm blurring the line between a physical error and a mental error, but either one will get a batter on base on a play that she should have been out :)

Don't feel bad. Most books look like this when you let a pitchers mom/dad keep score.

The rule is there as an equalizer IMHO, what do you score an unbelievable diving catch in the OF or IF.? A hit or 0 - 1? She robbed the batter of a hit, you have to give it both ways.

Thanks for all the replies. Puts it in perspective. We're keeping our own stats too. Question. DD had infield rocket hit to 3rd. She's very fast and looked like she was going to beat it out. But then 3rd makes throw one-hop in the dirt and 1st misses. Would you score that as a hit or not? I guess this is where it gets subjective?

The scorer has to determine if the throw was good, would the runner be out? If she makes it to the base as the ball hit the ground, it's a hit assuming she would have made it to the bag anyway right before the throw would have hit the glove....

I keep score and am a pitcher's parent - AND because of that, I always ask for help on questionable or close plays, I'll ask the coach, parents "Do you think she would have beat it out?" if they have a better angle, etc.... You just have to be objective and keep the question in mind "Should the play have been made with NORMAL FIELDING ABILITY" on missed plays, etc. A hard hit or very softly hit ball that takes a fielder off-balance is a hit, a ball kicked by the short stop that was right in front of her (assuming it was hit with average velocity) is an error, etc...How far did a fielder have to run to get to the ball? SS goes deep behind 2B, running and the ball tips off the glove - it's a hit.

I think it's funny when I hear oh she got a home run today and it was a bunt base hit with an overthrow by the catcher into right center field and another bad throw from the center fielder, etc....An 8Under home run... No wonder all these B All Stars have batting averages of .750

Here's a good one. Runner on third... infield in...ground ball to SS she throws home...runner beats it out...safe. Does batter get a hit ?
