Another reason that top notch softball players shouldn't be playing basketball.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Dumezich Goes Down as Whiting Loses to Griffith
Written by Rich Castillo
Wednesday, 10 December 2008
Whiting- Traveling to Whiting, the Griffith Panthers defeated the Lady Oilers 58-33. A strong Panther zone defense was the key to stopping Whiting, forcing the Oilers to use the perimeter as their main launching pad. Shooting just 32% from the field on the night, Whiting found it tough going right from the start.

Already trailing at the end of one quarter 13-8 things got worst for the Oilers. With 4:50 left to play in the first half Whiting’s Mel Dumezich went down with a knee injury. As a silent Whiting crowd held their breath, Dumezich one for six to this point, was unable to apply weight to the knee and had to be carried off the court. Whiting would get outscored 12-6 in the second quarter and go into the locker room down 25-14.

Emily Gadza, 19 points on the night, tried to pick up the Oilers' slack in the second half however it still wasn’t enough. The Oilers made just three of their ten shots taken in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Griffith (6-2) was led by junior Stephanie Negrete who scored eight of her 16 points in the third quarter. Her constant inside moves enabled the Panthers to build a 43-22 lead at the end of three quarters. Assisting Negrete was junior Shanlynn Bias with 11 points.

In the fourth, as most of the player’s minds may have been on Dumezich, the Oilers put together their best scoring quarter of the night, as they dropped in eleven. In the end it still wasn’t enough as the Oilers dropped to 4-4 on the season.

Next up for the Panthers will be Andrean on Friday night as the Oilers travel to River Forest to face the Ingots.

Out 2 months with an ACL? Must not have been a very serious. Those normally take 9 months or so.

No way she will play this season!! If anybody is looking out for this fine young lady, they will tell her to think about her future and not to worry about this season!! Wonder what A&M thinks about this!!

Not much that can be done by A&M at this point since the national letter of intent was already signed.

As you may or may not know athletic money is renewable every 12 months so long as she goes on campus next fall healthy and plays the way we all know she can play all is well. If not after her freshman year the coaches can reduce or not renew the deal if they so desire.

I hope the story is correct that it is only a 2 to 4 month rehab and she is back to enjoy her senior year in high school on the diamond, but not at the risk of a bright future.

Tough situation for any kid to be in and hopefully a very speedy recovery will happen.

The article clearly states an ACL injury - how do you come back that quick to play softball? Don't understand why she chose not to play bb for two years to focus on softball, then when she officially signs she decides to risk injury and play. Basketball is a hard sport to just fall into at competitive pace after not playing for a couple of years.

Still haven't heard if Lake Central even hired a new softball coach with Hauber resigning? Any gossip there yet?

I don't see why the college would be worried. Plenty of athletes recover from ACL injuries and have great careers. There is always the option of being redshirted her freshman year if there's any question. She'll be fine.

Whatever - LC is close to naming their coach and staff. There is a power struggle going on. AD wants a former assistant, and principal wants a different coach.
