Did you miss the part about this guy supplying jobs for 3,000 people????? That's not giving back to the community??? THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, BY CREATING A PRODUCT OR SUPPLYING SERVICE THROUGH EMPLOYING THE COMMUNITY, NOT THROUGH FREE HANDOUTS! lol...and just suppose that he and many others similarly situated do just that. Who's going to "give something back to the community" (as if he already hasn't, big-time) then? That's the difference between fantasy and pragmatism. Between idealism and realism. Between liberalism and conservatism. The issue isn't whether someone "ought" to do a particular thing (according to some arbitrary and highly suspect value system), but whether they will in fact do that thing. It's about aligning incentives with the real world, which conservatives do, and which liberals invariably don't.

This is what liberals ALWAYS fail to understand. The question isn't how well someone has already done. It's how well they can expect to do in the future. Businesses are inherently very risky. For every Bill Gates there are millions who fall flat on their face. A prospective businessman has to feel that he can earn a certain minimum return for the risk that he incurs, and for his investment of money, time, and expertise. Heavy taxes come straight out of that anticipated return, and thus directly impact the decision to incur the risk.

Liberals, invariably slaves to equality (which is the antithesis of liberty), always view the issue ex-post--"He's rich, so he should have to pay!" The correct perspective is ex-ante--"How do we incentivize people to invest and to take risks?" This guy isn't being vindictive. He's merely stating a simple fact: namely, that the anticipated benefit is no longer worth the risk and effort involved.

What he failed to mention is that 2900 of those jobs were in Nicaragua and paid 17 cents an hour. My guess is the only employees that ever made a living wage were the sales people. Rolling cigars in a sweat shop pays just over minimum wage. If there is a market for cigars someone will provide them.So if he closes his doors...no problem. The central American tobacco industry does not has a very good pension plan...does it.
