Intentional HBP

What's on your mind?

As for crowding the plate, some batters do that trying to intimidate the pitcher, but they have to know that the possibility is there of getting hit. As my DD's pitching coach tells her, when you are pitching, that is your plate and your strike zone, and you have to control it rather than let the batter control it.

Then, when he works with her on batting, he tells her "this is your plate, your strike zone, not the pitchers, etc....."

:)

Sometimes ya catch it.. most times you dont. Two right by the head are easy to tell.. retaliation is usually easier to catch, just the random HBP because this girl remembers in June some play back in a NFHS game... not easy to do anything about. I've played as a catcher, and we had the middle finger sign and thats the way funny business was handled.. I've coached and told my players they better not do it (but I know they still had their sign) and I've umpired and ejected for it.. so I've been at all aspects of this.

OK, this story is about college, where the pitchers usually don't bat, and isn't exactly about retaliation for a HBP, but more about the battle of wills between a pitcher and a batter.

I was at a VT/NC state game last year, and Angela Tincher (who if you don't know, is one of the best pitchers in college) got taken over the right field fence by NCState's right-handed hitting 3rd baseman. The next time the girl got up, with a couple outs, the first pitch was inside (you couldn't blame her for not pitching her outside again imho), so she turns and stares at Tincher for about 5 seconds, daring her to come inside again.

Now, Tincher is about 5'7" and maybe 130 lbs or so, and, from what I hear from my DD's new travel team that she is helping on occasion ( I can't wait for my DD to get to work with her in a couple weeks), a super nice girl, as I'm sure most college softball players are. The batter was probably 5'4"ish and outweighed Tincher by "a few" pounds.

So, second pitch of that at bat....bam, right on the butt. The batter threw down her bat, and started stomping towards 1st while glaring angrily at Tincher on the mound....who was looking down at her arm as she made a curve-ball motion over and over, like she was thinking "why didn't my curve ball break??".

I'm not sure she fooled anyone :D

She did strike the girl out her next time up in the last inning, btw.

Jofus,

Good story. Tincher is a great pitcher AND part of the reason for that is illustrated in your story. Pitchers need to be able to intimidate a little to be really effective IMHO.

Well, it was in the behind, and not high at all, even though the girl was pretty short and her rise ball is Tincher's main pitch. To me (in baseball or softball) attempting to put a ball in someone's ear is stepping over the line.

She's had a great career, with stats comparable to pitchers like Osterman and Abbott, but obviously doesn't get as much press since VT isn't a perennial softball school.

We have tentative plans to head down to Blacksburg to meet her and stuff in a couple weeks, hopefully it happens then or soon after.

My question is why was NC's third baseman still in the game. As soon as she headed for the circle (no mounds on NCAA softball fields) she should have been tossed. If the PU felt the "butter" pitch was intentional, Tincher is gone also. NCAA Rule 13.2

Donnie, you ever make it to Atlanta, PM me. You have some great stories. "see if they do that sh*@ to me again" Thats just hilarious.

HBP= hit by pitcher ??

If you swing at a pitch and get hit, is it a strike or a HBP? I have seen it called both ways which was confusing

And she was 9 then - by accident she and I got into fastpitch really over our heads early and had to sink or swim fast. She was good enough that she helped us win enough games that I fooled people into thinking I was a good coach, and we attracted so many super players, that even now no one really knows.

Yep

Strike.

Regarding stories, the older dd is one of those very sweet kids, a heck of an athlete, the younger is good too, but meaner than a rattler. The young one has a knack for saying things that crack me, the coaches, and the blues. I told this one before - but we were in a tough game against a good Houston team, my kid is pitching, they got a runner on 2nd, no outs, and I know runs are going to be tough - so I called out 'Runner cant advance - check 2 - go 1 - hold for a force' - probably said it a couple of times, which basically if the ball is hit to 1st or 2nd, get the quick out at 1st and then get the ball to 3rd, if in doubt, hold to setup the force at 3. Next pitch, the kid knocked it out of the park. We watched the kids clear the bases - she turns to me and says 'Hey Dad, did I make that simple for you or what ! ' She turns to the team and yells ' now its Plays at 1" grinning at me.

Being this damn old, I cant come up with stuff as fast as her so I am working on one - the next time she hangs a riser or something over the plate and someone puts it over the fence, I am going to yell out to her "So was that a Chef Boy R Dee or a Rigotoni Meatball?" Just hope I dont forget.

She didn't make a move towards the pitcher, just went down the line while glaring at the pitcher...although, she did throw her bat down pretty aggressively, which was probably questionable.

As for the pitch, while I'm sure everyone strongly suspected it was on purpose, I'm not sure a Div I college ump is gonna toss a pitcher on the first suspicious pitch. Plus, she made it clear that it was just a curve that didn't break, right? ;)
