NFHS Pitching Distance Change

by gunshy » Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:27 am

16u ASA pitches at 40 ft currently. My travel team plays at the most competitive level we can find, so believe me when I saw that I am NOT against progress and definitely not against helping HS players who want to play in college. This change will probably help my DD immediately. Just taking an objective view of the changes; high school softball is not the same as college softball, it is fundamentally different because the skill level and athleticism OF THE MAJORITY. This rule change will help the year-round players' batting averages, especially against schools who don't have top flight pitching, seperating the top from the bottom even further. Again, JMHO.

Gunshy,

One of the biggest differences between HS and Travel is coaching? Really? Would you mind sharing some tips with me (since you're an accomplished travel coach)? Let me guess, you're better at booking hotels? Or taking money from parents? Or are you better at planning 3 hour practices or dealing with educators and administrators? Do take average kids and try and make them better? Or do you take the best players you can find, and just scribble in a lineup?

What makes you so much better than a HS coach gunshy? Can't wait to hear back from you.

[quote="ntheknow"]Gunshy,

Do take average kids and try and make them better?

Seeing as he has worked with a number of my players as 10s and 12s, I would say the answer is yes.

needtoknow, OK, I've taken the bait! Just for clarity, there are some great high school coaches in Indiana but they are the exception rather than the rule. In the last 2 seasons of high school ball I have seen more apathetic, uninformed, unmotivated coaches than I care to remember. Not every school has the luxury of hiring a lay coach that is a great softball person; these schools must offer openings of this type within the school first. This often results in a coach that "used to play baseball" or ran track when they were in Jr High and really doesn't know much about softball at all. You can also be great in dealing with educators and administrators and not be worth a crap at coaching softball; saw that on a weekly basis this spring. I am not sure where you get your info or what games you watch in HS season, but you must be on an island somewhere far, far away. I have coached more than my fair share of games and have plenty of experience "scribbling names on a lineup card", but this thread is not about me so we'll leave it at that.

Oh boy!
ntheknow, spare us from your nonsense!

First of all, what average kid have you taken and made better in the short schedule of a hs season? NAME ONE! Or are you the one that keeps getting turned in to IHSAA for breaking the first practice rule? We know ya.
Lets see! You (supposedly) start tryouts in Feb. and begin play April. How many kids have you "really truley" led by the hand and made better in a month and a half? NAME ONE!

I think you owe the travel programs, instructors and the year round commitment of the parents and players that have made your high school program some what successful. It sure wasn't your 3 hour 18-2 coach/player ratio practice you scheduled in the gymnasium last February.

We're talking coaching here!!! Sounds as if you don't have the AD in your corner.
Most TOP programs have-
The money taker-aka treasurer
The hotel booker-aka travel agent
The lots of time on the internet at work person-aka administrator
The developer of skills and lineup scribbler-aka coach

No more please!

Oh by the way, back to the original thread of pitching distance.
I can see both sides here!
Although, 43ft is on the topic of discussion once again for 16u for ASA.
