pitchers/catchers

by sstone2 » Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:29 am

Every one knows a good pitcher is complimented by a good catcher.
When you know the pitcher/catcher combination works well with each other, should the coach try other catchers? Should the two stay together on the same team all through their years of playing?
I have seen pitchers hold back because of a catcher. Seen pitchers throw better with a certain catcher.Just curious.

Just like keeping that red hot team together it is nearly impossible to maintain a matched pair pitcher/catcher. Skill levels don't stay the same, one is happy on the team the other isn't, somebody moves, schedules and priorities change. It is best to get used to working with new people because with very few exceptions that is what will happen. It can be really unpleasant when one girl out paces the other and you have tied the two together -now somebody is either going to hang back and not develop or move on.

we all know the better the catcher, the better the pitcher...weve been with teams where my catcher makes the pitcher really goods that season, but if the catcher grows too fast, the pitcher will have to adjust when they move on...niether should hold back the other...

Pitchers will be throwing to a bunch a catchers throughout their career. I would not bother trying to keep a particular battery together. If a pitcher needs a certain catcher to be effective, they must not be a very good pitcher. Likewise a catcher needs to learn to be a good reciever of various pitching styles. There is more to being a good reciever than just "catching the ball."

I disagree with your statement. A pitcher is a pitcher and a catcher is a catcher. A catcher does not make a so so pitcher better and a good pitcher does not make a so so catcher better. They compliment each other. Most young catchers have problems catching pitchers who have alot of spin and alot of movement on the ball. It takes, sometimes years for these catchers to develope. I agree with one of the statement from another post a catcher has to be more than just a receiver, but a catcher has to learn to receive from all styles of pitchers.

Sorry Tex, beg to differ. If a catcher is in fact a good receiver she knows about ajusting to the batter in the box ( up or back), setting up on the corners, and good framing of pitches..
This helps pitchers tremendously even at an early age in 10U..It's not saying the pitcher is not a good one..she is..but that catcher will help her get a few extra calls and they could be important ones...

A pitcher should make friends with every great catcher possible. From my limited experience, the pitcher can be no better than their catcher and catching is, and has been, the weakest part of the female game.

I must agree with most of this. But how many pitcher/catcher combinations are really developed enough to say they complement each other? Both are equally important but will add, a pitcher that has a catcher that can not dig one out of the dirt can be affected and will tend to slow down the speed of a pitch. So I say keep a good pitcher/catcher together if at all possible. Does not mean other catchers on a team shouldn't catch and also most teams have 3 pitchers so the catcher will be catching different styles of pitchers. Question; should and when does a catcher call the pitches? :)

I'm going to start this fall with my 2nd year 12U catcher's. She going to start calling Pool games and hopefully progress from there.
