Boom Boxes at Softball tournaments. TD's Outlaw them.

by Ifubuildit » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:54 pm

Having attended the recent 10U turnament in Southlake I got the opportunity to observe several teams with their rolling boomboxes at the ballfields. Some of these were playing so loud the players on the other fields were being distracted by the noise. This for the players takes away from their focus during the game. For the coaches it becomes annoying when you can't hear an umpire's call because of the noise 50 yards away on the next field.

The parents at the ballfields I was sitting at the time got so annoyed that one gentleman actually walked over and almost got into a fight with the team who had the boombox blaring as loud as they could turn up. Then after he left the team continued to turn it up just to annoy the parents at the other field who complained.

Aside from almost getting to see a fight at the ballfields, the content of the music being played on these boxes is less than acceptable for 10U team. Many of the songs being played contain sexual innuendo and were not appropriate for that age group. If the parents of those kids heard the R-rated or in some cases X-rated version of those songs they would be complaining to tournament directors across the metroplex. The sad part of this is those kids will go out on the Internet and will download the R. or X. rated version without their parents knowledge and think that's cool. Then their parents will wonder how little Susie learned a new language she never spoke before that is filled with four letter words.

I took the time to have a serious discussion with an umpire after the game and he suggested to me that I should write ASA to voice my concern. While I'm not opposed to doing that I would rather the tournament directors across the metroplex addresses address this issue and ban these boxes.

I would urge all of you parents who have similar concerns to express those concerns to the tournament directors before you start each tournament. Maybe then we can prevent children from being exposed to music content that should not be allowed at the ballpark in a family atmosphere. It provides no real benefit to the integrity of the game.

I agree...and can almost guarantee it is the 8U teams that are moving up to 10U that are using these boomboxes...I think the TD's should not allow them...this isn't a concert...this is a tournament where one little distraction can put someone in the hospital. We went to watch an 8U tournament about a month ago and noticed these boomboxes...funny thing is the parents are watching the game, the players are in the dugout...but for us bystanders I noticed other teams girls who weren't playing (waiting for next game) dancing...I could not believe that 8 year old girls were dancing the way they were and to my amazement...(yeah right) I noticed no parents around these girls while they were doing this...I've been to 10U tournaments, 8U tournaments, 12U and some 14U tournaments to just get a feel for the game (compare my daughter to some competition) and I can honestly say I did not see any of this going on at any other tournaments other then 8U or (now) 10U tournaments...

time to grow up parents/coaches and play ball...not hold a rock/rap concert...my .02...and don't give me no crud about it gets the girls ready to play and hyped up...

Hope it's OK for a Hoosier to post on the TX board.

Have not seen boomboxes used to this extreme in 12u, 14u, 16u or 18u in Indiana. But I have seen boomboxes used discreetly, and not in a way to disturb neighboring games. DD's 12u team (that would be four or so years ago) turned on a boom box during warmups as we were the first scheduled game of the day and the girls needed a little pumping up. In 18u, have seen teams turn on a boombox during pre-game warmups, but at an acceptable volume.

I don't mind if a team listens to music during a tournament if it's at an acceptable volume, but I wouldn't be upset to see a ban if it stops what borders on abuse.

I think...and I could be wrong...what the OP is referring to is some of the teams up here in NTX play them in between innings...or when a certain batter is up...and it can be loud...sometimes they play them from behind the centerfield fence (to not stirr a ruckass at the actual game) and they get loud enough for everyone to hear them on the other fields...

don't mind them for pregame warmup if suitable...but the in between innings and when certain batters are up? come on...

What’s all this jibba jabba! You guys are right. I never hear music at the major league games at all, or basketball, football, volleyball… Come on, music is part of the game. There are many times that music has picked myself and the girls up to give and extra boost and have some fun. Fun, remember that word?

Before everyone starts piling on, I agree the music needs to be played at a respectable level and appropriate songs. I am with you 100% there. That’s where being a responsible parent/coach/person comes in, and yes it is sad that there are always some knuckleheads causing problems at the fields. If the TD has to ban radio then we would not bring ours, no problem.

By the way we use a little Bose radio about the size of a lunchbox, portable, easy, and too small to reach another field.
