Questionable Coaches

Are Felons allowed to coach softball? Are there rules or background checks that are required before someone can coach a team, especially an "A" ball team?

There are plenty of Rules but no one to enforce them. The team manager needs to take the steps to ensure the coaching staff is acceptable. Then the parents need to do the same never trust anyone with your child that you haven't sspecifically checked out yourself and even then be cautious.

I thought a person needed a background check to coach in ASA? Also, can this be a liability issue with the team and association that the team is sanctioned with?

Most likely depends on what the FELONY the person was charged with and when. Drug charges and violent crimes are usualy a NO NO. Especially if they are recent. Any crime against a child should be automatic NO NO.

I know of a coach that has three Felonies! Two for drugs and one for murder. At first he led us to believing that he had messed up when he was young but never specified that he had been to prison for three felonies. It was just assumed that it was just for one felony where he said that he did something stupid. Now I learned that he has not just one but three felony convictions and served time in prison. I guess that is our fault for not doing a deeper check on him.

What is the softball associations and organization responsibility on something like this? I'm trying to approach this in the right way. I know that there are a lot of bleeding liberals that would say to give this guy a chance, but my conscious says "No way"!

I have never understood why soccer is able to have a means of dealing with this issue as well as inappropriate behavior by adults and children at games, while softball has nothing even close. Adults/kids can act with relative impunity in youth softball but if/when certain behavior occurs in either AYSO or club soccer and it is reported, nontrivial sanctions are a very real possiblity. Those sanctions include suspensions ranging from 1 game to permanent expulsion, required completion of a referee course, fines of hundreds of dollars, and others. If a coach with a felony conviction is reported in soccer, the coach is typically required to appear before a disciplinary board (called the PAD) which then decides whether he/she will be allowed to continue to coach.

Yes there are rules that address this, especially on the 'A' verses 'B' issue.

For an 'A team, all coaches must have background checks.

But for the 'B' team??? Rapists, murderers, perverts are all welcome...

Hey folks, this is no joking matter. If I knew of a felon out there, I would out him/her. Who cares if he/she gets his cheerios pee'd in. How would you feel if your kid came into contact with him/her and no one told you?

I think there is a difference in being a felon, and being a dangerous felon. Martha Stewart is a felon, and I would prolly let her baby sit... Except that she's a b!tch.
