What is considered "unsportsmanlike conduct" in softball

by monkeysmom » Fri Nov 13, 2009 3:37 pm

I have seen numerous things discussed as being "unsportsmanlike" in softball. Some of them to be honest did not seem to fall into that category ex: batter peeking at catcher to determine where pitch will be. I was just interested in getting a list going.

I will start with one that irks me...defense blocking every bag on every play whether they are making a play for the ball or not. Causes runners to go around and possibly run into the defense which will get them called out.

Have your runner NOT GO AROUND the defensive players, running into an obstructing defensive player will not get them called out - they will get the next base awarded them (providing the blue feels they would have reached with out the obstruction). We won a tough game on this - F5 was standing in the base path, our runner brushed against her - trying to avoid an all out collision, but making enough contact that Blue could see it - and she got home.

You are correct it shouldn't get a runner called out if the defense is not making a play for the ball but unfortunately I have seen it happen twice. Bad call but...

You're kidding, right?

How do you figure it's the batter's responsibility to create a clear throwing lane for the catcher???
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

I think the obstruction rule is fine the way it is just not enough blue's pay attention which is where I have the problem if they called it the girls would learn not to be there...my version of unsportsmanlike is when coaches act as if it is the world series and it is a pool game..and I have seen some even taunt the other team....this is what irks me..we are all there for the girls and the love of the game not the coaches egos....and BTW Monkey you are always stirring it up...

You are correct, It is not the batters responsibility to clear a throwing lane, But when the batter fakes a bunt while stepping back into the throwing lane?? (throw to third)

I think it is unsportsmanlike when the coach challenges the umpire out to the parking lot for a fight during a game. When the umpire makes a call against the coach, he yells, "don't you know who I am!" LOL     Actually saw this happen in Fresno last spring season.
To each their own.
