Our girls got to the District finals, where the team that won was selective at hitting pitches

They were coaching to win and your team was coaching to improve the ballplayers. They'll get their laurels in 10U. Your players will get theirs for years to come.

Thanks Martin....that's why DD played 12U this season and was on the 12U town travel team as a 10 y/o...our coaches coach to improve the player long term.....easily said now, not so easy when the waterfall of tears appears after you lose in the District Finals and all the hard work done is complete as the season is over.

I am amazed at how often I see "win now" mentality take precedence over long-term development.

It's essentially killed our first-year 10U travel team.

DD does practice a lot every day. Like any normal 10 year old she picks up mechanical flaws that need to be corrected and are corrected once identified. The source of my frustration is that her coach is completely ignoring mechanics and velocity and making pitching rotation decisions after one week of practice based solely on whether the ball crosses the plate or not.

If I had known every practice pitch she would throw was subject to a grade I would have certainly pulled her out of her swim team practices.

At 10u I would never lock my kid into a 1 role player. If we try out for various teams we do mention she can pitch but at this age she wants to learn every position on the field. When joining a team & this is preached on my DD 10u TB team religously, is " You are joining this team to be on the Team not to be a 1st basemen, Pitcher, SS etc.... We are here to get better & learn the game. Coach will put you where we feel is the best spot for you. If you can not deal with this then our team is not for you."
I have already seen a 10u pitcher in SoCal who is actually a descent little pitcher but thats the only thing PoPs wants for her and she has played on 3 or 4 different teams this year and now I do not even think she os playing.

DD will pitch as much as possible for the 10U team, although she is adjusting to the 11" ball, so the release point is still off a bit.....the flip side is pitching from 35' versus 40' like she did all year makes the fastball quicker....the 11" ball also makes the change-up easier to throw as she can grip the ball better.

To say anything close should be a strike is a joke. What if your Pitcher really works hard and parents are taking her to lessons and she is able to throw a variety of pitches & hit her spots. Then you go to a tournament & they call balls strikes for weaker pitchers I would be bummed.

I think I mentioned somewhere in my rant that the upside to this drama has been that DD has gotten to play other postions and done well there. I've started to see her more as a softball player rather than just a pitcher as a result.

When she makes the switch to TB, whether it's sooner or later, I think having the ability to pitch should give her the edge over other position players, all other things being equal.

UnderTheRadar, if a 10U girl has been taking lessons, throws hard, and pitches enough real strikes, your team is probably going to win the 10U All Star tournaments. The wild pitchers are still going to walk enough batters to allow runs to score.

I am sure that I sound like a pitchers parent by saying things like 'anything close should be a strike'. I really meant to say that the 10U rec and All Star games would be improved by expanding the strike zone so that the games are not a walkfest. Certainly it would be a better game to watch, we can debate whether or not it is better for the pitchers and hitters.

I can't ever remember 10u all-stars being a walk fest. Even in 8's most leagues have two pitchers that can throw a strike.
