not sure if mythbusters is still in production but if they are i will be shooting them an e-mail.

hey wade how do you like your kool-aid, straight or on the rocks?

For alleged scientists you sure have no science and a lot of jibes.

Hopefully mythbusters hooks you up with some science, lord knows the "sarah" thing didnt work out too well.

Lemme know if I can google up anything else fer ya.

i guess some people have been talking about this on myth busters. maybe if enough people comment on it they may pick it up? maybe wade could make his tv debut as the jumping riseball advocate? then when they bust the myth we can all be entertained as he tells them their idiots, because he an umpire and he's always right.

I never saw a rise ball jump. I saw a rise ball rise. I've also seen a curveball curve and a drop ball drop too. Sarah's video and the pic of Cat are exactly the pitch I know as a riseball.

Now if someone is throwing a jump ball or hop ball, I'd like to see it.

The pitch you and jofus are talking about.. nope; I've not seen the bugs bunny pitch.

Still no science huh?

Nothing? At all? You are like a witch doctor scientist maybe?

let's not use semantics in your argument.

question?

That is a very good question Mr. Flat earth scientist.

Allow me to explain my position.

I in fact do not believe in, what I will call the jofus pitch (not to be confused with the eephus pitch (probably also impossible according to our voodoo scientists))

I am; however, a firm believer in the rise ball.

With your trained scientist eye, you cannot see the rising ball in Sarah's pitch?

Those of you using baseball studies should understand that a softball is not a base ball and the over handed downwards delivery of a baseball is not comparable to a underhanded upwards trajectory delivery. A big difference is in this case, the softball ball is already moving up. The forces of upward movement are already in place. Are you arguing spin cannot affect that?

Thats not some obscure image. I googled for the image you guys told me disproved the rise ball . I dont think they are experts or that that categorically proves or disproves anything, but if you guys are going to quote evidence and studies, I would steer clear of the sarah thing in the future.

This is not my area of expertise, but I think the reason that pitch fools batter is about 2 feet away from sarah, that ball looks like its going to be a big meat ball, the brain tells the batter to swing.

When they decide to swing, that ball the ball has begun its rise up. Universally about this time, every batter is either lamely contorting themselves to check-it or saying to them selves "oh sh#$% they got me".

By the time the bat is swung, the ball is over their head. This is when they have the "crap I got got by a rise ball " universal look on their face.

By the time they are in the dugout, they are embarrassed and saying "boy did you see that ball hop" to save face.

Anyone else have a reasonable explanation for the success of this pitch?

huh? you are a true spinmaster, wade.

one last question and i'm done ( i hope)

in your expert opinion

is their any trajectory (not spin) differance between a high fast ball and rise ball?

please answer in one direct sentence ( if that's even possible )

From 10U-16U..not much if any perceptible difference, even considering spin. I dismiss most riseballs as high fast balls. They can't do it.
18G and Up or mens, when the strength is there to get significant back spin on release-there is a definite hang and trajectory difference.

Definitely.

Several factors, including some in your post above.
-The batter is already in motion to what was originally processed in her brain as a meatball.
-She possibly caught a glimpse of the ball spin
-Her eyes/brain have been trained for years that there is an expected drop rate in a ball and this one isn't doing what it is supposed to do
-Some or all of the above.

That pitch actually flattens out right before it crosses the plate which is entirely too late for corrective action/no action.

Most of the time, you can even see the tells. Pitcher posture is straighter or leaning and pitching arm is "digging in" for the wrist snap. It just initially looks so dang pretty.

FWIW Wade, Ernie Parker agrees with you. But that's about it, other than the local pitching coaches and umpires. ;)
