Paid Coaches?

Ok...I have a few newbie questions about paid coaches. We have considered bringing in a paid coach because we (the current coaches) feel that it would be an upgrade and the girls can relate better to someone who has played the game at a high level.

1. How do these paid coaches get paid? By the hour? What is the going rate?
2. How do you find one of these coaches (in Houston)? We have been looking for about a month or two with no luck so far. Any leads or suggestions?
3. What do the coaches expect in terms of control over the team? Do they make player decisions or simply run practices.

95...There have been so many players came through your leagues organization that went on to college and play. In fact, one just graduated from A&M and is helping coach a team down the road from you in an organization that she didn't play in. Find those former college players, ask your league directors for names of possibilites. They are out there, you just have to find them. I don't know about the other questions you raise but I would assume they would be paid depending on the amount of help they are providing (ie. just practices, some tourneys, everything, etc.) and that might be a monthly amount. Of course it also depends on how much time they are willing to put in, but I would think that those former players that appreciate what their organization did for them would like to return the favor in some way.

In these parts, quite often it's the local HS coaches that end up coaching the travel team.

Speaking specifically of the small town I live in, the varsity coach is very involved with the local travel league. He directly coaches our 14U travel squad, as those player are either currently, or will be next seasons, varsity players.

He uses some of his assistant coaches as well as former players to coach at the other levels ...10U, 12U, etc......but they are all coaching his system. He has total and complete control of the entire travel priogram.

Basically, he's just grooming what are likely to become his varsity teams.

He and the other coaches all receive a lump sum fee, agreed to out of the budget from registration.

I'm sure there are plenty of other payed coaches making much more money doing it other ways....but his main interest is ensuring his HS program is successful. Which it is.

Most of the paid coaches in Central Texas are former college players who want to stay involved in the game. I've also met some who are former Gold players within an organization and this is their opportunity to give back. If I were you, I'd check with the local university coaches and see if they know of any former players who might be interested. The majority of your major college coaches won't let their current players coach in the spring due to their softball/class schedules.

In general most are paid a minimum dollar amount above the cost of traveling to tournaments. There are some that do it for nothing, but I think they're quite rare. In other words, it's not something to quit your day job to pursue. Some organizations will have the parents pay monthly dues into an account and pay the coaches out of that. This allows them to save some money over the course of the year to fund trips to nationals.

One thing about high school coaches (in Texas)....I was told by a current high school coach that she had to turn down coaching offers because the girls on the teams were slated to go to her high school and it's a UIL violation due to the additional practices and tournaments. I couldn't tell you where it's written in stone.

I'm thinking that if the coach has to leave the field and playing area to get that bag of peanuts, it could be worth every penny invested.

Whatever, you have your opinon, I have facts. Know too many girls that have been pressured to change instructors, simply because they didnt "like" or approve of the instructior a player is going to.

And why would I be a fool to not go to them. Do they know evereything? Are they they best private coaches? Matter of opinion. Also, you asked for top gold coaches, not just 2. Im sure Kurtz and Breuder would dissagree with your opinion.
