But I do know you. Never had dinner with you. But I know who you are. And so we are clear, I have nothing against you. I wouldn't be opposed to having a beer or bratwurst some day.

I also recognize that you have a right to your opinion. And you have a right to voice that opinion. Those are freedoms we all enjoy in this country. But I'm pretty confident that your opinion is in the minority.

By the way, imagine what a different world this would be with 3 or 4 atom bombs instead of 2...yes, mercy.

I'll tell ya a story. Years ago, when my DD first started playing, her team got pummeled. And the coach DID have his girls 'step off'. I took offense to that. In fact, I felt pretty much like you do right now. But after being around this sport for a 'very long time' I learned there are better lessons to be learned in these situations. I also recognized there is NO development going on with either team in these situations.

Do me a favor, ask your daughter this question. Ask her how she would feel walking across the field to shake the opposing teams hands after putting up a 20 spot against them. I'm sure she will be pleased with the way her team played. I would expect that. And there is nothing wrong with that. But guide her a little towards the direction of humility or satisfaction and see which she chooses. I would be willing to bet she will lean more towards the 'guilt' side. She will understand what just happened. And I'm willing to bet she would not feel real good about it.

And so we are all on the same page, I never made a claim to being a coach. But I do know the game. And I do know the mindset of pre-teen and teen girls.

Gold Elite: You had me at beer and brat. Now I am thirsty and hungry (mostly thirsty).

I have talked to my daughter about these types of situations and her opinion is to not be in the situation in the first place. No matter how the score is handled, the game is just bad for everyone involved. In retrospect, I don't think anyone would agree on the best way to handle the situation, but everyone would agree they do not want to be in the situation from either side.

Regardless I do not believe permanent damage was done in this pool play game. And, as the girls get older the amount of 22-1 butt kickings will significantly drop. Most players will have funneled into A or B ball and play in those repsective classes. The teams will be more evenly matched and the pitching and defense much better.

The best possible outcome is that the losing coach did take VERY good notes during the game. Then that losing coach will work incredibly hard to correct everything that went wrong. Then, come June or July that team gets its revenge for the 22-1 butt kicking they took last week.

I am glad we talked, though! We put a little excitement back in the Indiana heybucket!

Maybe now we can discuss who is the best 8U team and really get a debate going! :D

That is the way things work when reasonable and rational people respect each other's right to have and share their opinions

This board does need a jolt on occasion. But thank you to Heybucket for the forum you provide.

Maybe now we can discuss who is the best 8U team and really get a debate going! :D

We all know this will forever be a 12u discussion. And on occasion a first year 14u will try to get it going in this age group.

If you were there you would of realize they did step off the base and all the kids were bunting when the score got out of hand. I also heard the opposing teams organization leader told the other coach not to back off because the coaches and kids needs to realize what they need to work on. Next time before posting you might need to know the circumstances, "Gold Elite"

The circumstances were, one team was far superior to the other. And the superior team ran up the score. Those are the only 'circumstances' relevant to my statements.

A 20 spot is an awful lot of runs. Whether they stepped off or not, it should have been done sooner. And as far as the losing teams 'organizational leader' saying to not back off, that's absolutely ridiculous too. If it takes giving up 20+ runs to figure out what they need to work on, somebody needs to give up coaching altogether.

I'm not saying that wasn't said. I'm saying, if it was, that's ridiculous too. What do you really think anyone is learning in this situation. If the winning team is bunting, and the losing team can't field a bunt, then STEP OFF and let them work on bunts in practice. Winter indoor practice is great for that.

That's okay tomsmith, you'll figure it out someday. I have faith in that.

There has to be a fine line somewhere. You never want to teach the girls to let off but you do want to teach them sportsmanship. I'm sure the game was not fun for either team. It's A Lot Like 161 TO 2 BASKETBALL Game. Maybe tyh ey could've let off a little sooner. Or maybe they worked on some stuff and kept winning. If your losin fb tyh at bad you might have to reevaluate the tournaments and class you play in.

GoldElite, you seem like a coach of a team that loves to use the "Gold or Elite" status behind your team name and play in B world series tournaments. I can assure you the coaches of that team are great coaches and know how to win and lose with sportsmanship. Unless you were there and saw the game there was only so much that team could do. Besides what does the losing team learn if the winning team steps off the base? It sounds like you were the kid that always got a participation trophy . This is travel ball not rec ball.

tomsmith (since we are now on a first name basis, I know this is difficult to follow, so I will type real slow for ya...

1) it was established (admittedly by me) earlier in this thread that I am not a coach. I do enjoy helping out when needed. But I recognize that my DD is much better off playing for someone who knows how to manage the game...MANAGE: verb; be in charge of; administer; run

2) As slapperdad so eloquently tried to point out, my chosen name GoldElite is pretty much a knock on exactly what you accused me of being. The thing is, I was being SATIRICAL (root word SATIRE: noun; the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's (mean word alert) stupidity)

3) you stated "...there was only so much that team could do." Assuming you were referencing the losing team, duh...I think that was pretty obvious. If you are referencing the winning team, I agree that there is only 'so much' they could do. Point is, it doesn't appear they did it soon enough or often enough.

Here is the concept, it's simple...winning team up by 10+ and coming up to bat: first batter walks, ROE, single/double (ie gets on base). First pitch next batter has take and base runner steals. There is a great thing to work on in this situation. Now, before next pitch (pay attention, this is where it gets tricky), base runner leaves early, thus being called out with a no-pitch. Now, batter at plate repeats process. Simple as that. Let's face it, if the pitching is that bad, you can't say 'we wanted the at-bats' toget our work in. You're better off doing tee work.

4) you said "..what does the other (losing) team learn if they (winning team) step off base." My answer, which is what you were looking for, is nothing. But they also don't learn anything by getting pounded. As I stated earlier, after giving up 10 runs, the losing coach should know what they need to work on. And winter indoor practice is best used when working on scenarios...Ooops, I assume, because I don't coach.

5) sportsmanship...I'm not even gonna touch that one.

tomsmith, as me and kidcanhit figured out earlier in the thread, we are both man enough to recognize and appreciate both sides. So, while I recognize your right to have and share your opinion, there is absolutely nothing you can say that would convince me it is in the best interest of any of the girls on either team. But rather more about parents being able to say 'WE pounded them this winter"...note the WE being used in a FACETIOUS (adjective; treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor) manner

By the way, a participation trophy? Hell no! We were too poor. Our league only gave out ribbons. And that was only when an elder was there that could count. Otherwise we couldn't even keep score. See what I did there
