Try-outs Already???

by RlCldH2O » Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:37 am

What the heck? Didn't we just get back from Nats?

Is this normal timing? Kinda new (or niave) but I went to the store an bought a volleyball.

What gives, is it really starting back this quick or is this just the first rounds of things to see who is out there looking to make a move?

Thanks

Time to get ready for the fall season. You will probably find tryouts going on from now until the end of August.

There is no break...DFW is booked solid with tournaments through August.

As for tryouts...what better time? Teams have traveled together, pissed off at each other or the coach, bummed that their team didn't do better...all that BS. A good coach might drop a line in the water and see who bites.

But I bought a volleyball :) Better try and check with the school to see when they hold practices. May see if she can do both, I sure did want to see her spike on some girls this year.

Well thanks for letting me know.

Any idea on how many girls playing fall select play others sports (volleyball, basketball)? During the spring we are all softball, but I had kind of hoped to see her do others sports. Then again I do not want her to fall behind in softball. Arrgghh

Tough decision, some girls play other sports and have no problem but playing multiple travel sports can lighten the wallet for sure. Once in High School, if your DD is not playing travel ball in the Fall, you are limiting her in the recruiting department. In addition, the longer she stays away from the softball field the better the chances that she will fall behind other players, especially at the older ages. We took off most of August and most of January this past year but with all of our players in HS this year, who knows when we'll start back up in the Spring.
My daughter is perfect, she knows everything. Just ask her.

Lefty, could you come to my house and explain this to my remaining daughter? Older dd heads off to her dream and younger is playing vb, track, and softball, she did finally bag basketball. I see kids without her talent who because of focusing on softball, are passing her by. But, who am I , just dad and dads dont know sxxx.

My DD is going into the 7th grade, she competed as 12U this last season and went with her team to Colorado Fireworks (Won it) and ASA Nats (T33) so the pocket book did take a beating. Not to mention the trips to the Chiropractor, she played catcher and had more than a few collisions.

We will be moving up to 14u for the fall and since this is really all getting started again we will be out there.

DonnieS -- You can't feed a rock. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink... etc. etc.

My DD, much to my disappointment, chose not to go Travel 2nd yr. 12s. Stayed Rec. Again made the choice 1st yr. 14s. This fall, she had several invitations to join a mid/lower level A team for 2nd yr. 14s and again decided to stay Rec (Fallball, regular season, Allstars + High School JV). Actually the team most suited for her just finished 5-2 for 7th place at 14U Nationals in Georgia ... that would have been fun.

I can't get upset really. There are hundreds of things to occupy one's time, and the odds that Travel FP would be the thing that really rings her bell are pretty low. It's not like she's hanging out at the mall wasting time.... she has lots of friends, sort of the leader of her posse, surfs, rides her bike around, and is a leader on her AllStar Rec team.

But she really won't do a lot of drills, physical training and such necessary to evolve as an elite athlete outside the lines. She has nationally renowned hitting instructors willing to work with her. She's got the best training at her fingertips, but,,,, you have to WANT IT! YOu have to be upset when practice is cancelled. YOu have to think about it all the time!

I'm cool with that ultimately. It would have been nice to see where it could lead, but I know a person needs to pursue the things that get them excited, not the things that excite their parents! Perhaps in a year or so she'll get bored of Rec and mediocre High School ball and decide she wants to see how far she can go in the sport... but that's just not her thinking right now. It's not easy to see the whole picture when you're still 13, but she's very clear about what she likes! She would do it if I MADE her... but you have to pick your battles on the DO IT BECAUSE I SAY SO front, and sport certainly isn't an area to pull that card!
